Landscaping around the backyard swing set or neighborhood playground requires taking a step back and viewing the play area as a child would. Landscaping needs to be functional so it doesn't interfere with rambunctious play. The landscape also needs to flatter the area with a simple design to make the play area inviting. Playground landscapes requires a few simple elements to create a pleasing place for play. Simple plants, good equipment, a soft surface for landing and relief from the sun are easy to deliver with a little planning.
Surfacing
-
Placing a layer of mulch, rubber mulch or mats below the playground offers a soft place for crash landings. Children fall on playgrounds as sure as the sun will shine. However, providing a layer of soft bedding eases those inevitable tumbles. Mulch can be contained within a framed-in area that allows plenty of room around the perimeter of the playground equipment. Aim for at least 6 feet from the edge of the frame to the play set to allow for the children's protection should they fall of the swings or slide. Any such surface creates a bonus barrier against weeds, helping to keep the playground area looking sharp with minimal maintenance.
Hardy Plants and Shrubs
-
Surrounding a play area with gorgeous plants creates the perfect paradise for kids to play in. It doesn't really work for the plants though. Delicate plants have no place near a playground where damage can and will happen. Choose sturdy evergreen shrubs, bushes and ornamental grasses that can handle a little bashing from a kickball. Limit flowering bushes and plants as well to keep the flying insects to a minimum. Kids love to pick flowers and sometimes invite the bees to sting as a result. Omit the flowering bushes and leave the kids and bees to their prospective business.
Sun Vs. Shade
-
Visions of a sunny day on the playground evoke warm memories of childhood fun and games. It also reminds of burned bottoms from sliding down hot metal and plastic slides. Playgrounds capture the sun and hold it in at times, making for occasional uncomfortable episodes of play. Consider planting tall shade trees around the playground to offer periods of shade and sun. This gives the kids the best of both worlds to accommodate both cooler and warmer days. Just make sure any tree plantings don't interfere with the play equipment. Also consider adding a picnic table or a gazebo for impromptu picnics and snack time treats.
