Milwaukee, situated on the shore of Lake Michigan, is a bustling city that is home to nearly 600,000 people, according to 2013 United States Census Bureau estimates. Parents in Milwaukee will find a large selection of free activities for their children to enjoy, including indoor museum activities and outdoor nature activities.
Park Activities
Milwaukee has some beautiful parks that your family can visit for free, such as the Clovernook Playfield, which features volleyball courts, baseball and softball fields, a tennis court, basketball courts and a children's play area. At Meaux Park, you can walk the Oak Leaf trail with your kids, play soccer or have some play time on the tot lot. During the summer, the Milwaukee Recreation Department offers summer playground programs for free at select playgrounds. Activities include arts and crafts, dodgeball, kickball, contests, field trips and cool spots -- areas with sprinklers connected to fire hydrants. Fishing is free for kids under 16 at some city parks and free fishing clinics are held for kids in the spring. These clinics teach children the basics of fishing, including how to make a knot, fishing techniques, safety and fish identification.
The Milwaukee Public Library branches offer a variety of free children's programs, including art workshops for those in kindergarten through fifth grade. A Fall Kids Club includes science, art and music activities. Story times and play groups are offered for children preschool age and younger. During a Saturdays at Central program, kids create their own works of art based on the books they read during the program. Programs for teens include Bring the Forest Home, which gives teens an opportunity to make their own accessory holders and journals using actual tree branches. At o.m.g. i'm smART!, teens create their own expressive pieces of art.outdoor play equipment
