Life has become so 'hurry up and wait', it taxes the nerves of even the most patient among us. Every child--and nearly all adults, need some free time to play.

Outdoor play benefits all of us socially, emotionally and physically. The big challenge is taking the time to open that door and actually get out there. The fun begins quickly when you've got the right stock of great outdoor gamesfor entertainment and recreation!

Here is our 'easy step' approach to make it happen at your house:

Step A: If you live in a house, make sure your back yard is kid-friendly and safe.

If you don't have a back yard, find a good local park and adopt it as your own. There are so many classic lawn games that can be easily transported to the park or just about anywhere. Encourage kids to play freely as they choose but it's fine for adults to have some community play time on occasion, just don't 'take over.'

Step B: Provide the right toys and outdoor games for discovery. Any item that encourages the development of new skills and is fun at the same is a sure bet. Younger kids, for example, can make up the most creative games with an Outdoor game favorite, a rainbow parachute with hand holds for many.

Step C: Don't drive-- walk, run, trot but don't drive. Take a simple walk around the neighborhood and turn it into a an Outdoor game of exploration. This one is a freebie and requires no purchase of equipment as may be needed for other classic lawn games but we believe one should never overlook the value of a good 'constitutional.'

Step D: Togetherness is a great thing! Keep an eye out for outdoor games and other activities you can engage with your kids. Stock a variety of playground balls and always be prepared for a pick up game of kickball. Everyone loves that one and will want to join in. Badminton and bocce ball are also other great options in the classic lawn games arena to entice your crew.

The rules of each outdoor game don't matter as much as the fun you have playing all together. It's true, our family has been known to have our own version of rules for some of our favorite Outdoor games.

Step E: Don't let the seasons pass you by. Spring planting is always fun (so long as it doesn't overrun your tetherball site!). Fall raking and leaf piles are completely irresistible around our house. Sledding or tobogganing in winter, can't live without it!

Step F: Your Outdoor Game Toybox? Stock it well and they will come-enthusiastically! Hula hoops twirling to your kids' latest music completely rock both for the fun factor and the cardio workout. A variety of playground and kickballs are completely necessary. You get the idea here...
